POSITION OVERVIEW

​

The Lead Editor will be the overall leader of the editorial, content development, and publication process for all DAMA International publications, including but not limited to the DMBOK® 3.0, white papers, and other forms of professional content. The Lead Editor role is a part-time engagement compensated with an annual budget of $75,000 (USD).

 

This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for setting the editorial direction and vision for these publications, ensuring their ongoing accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness. The Lead Editor will guide and review the professional content published by DAMA-I, ensuring its alignment with the objectives of DAMA-I and the standards as defined by the Certification Council and industry best practices.

 

This position requires editorial leadership, structured content development experience, and exceptional communication and collaboration skills. The Lead Editor will work closely with the Editorial Board, the Project Manager, and the DAMA International Board of Directors.

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Editorial Leadership & Content Oversight

  • Define and execute the editorial vision and strategy for DMBOK® 3.0 and related DAMA publications.

  • Lead the selection and coordination of Specialty Editors to ensure comprehensive subject matter expertise.

  • Establish content strategy, themes, and knowledge area priorities, ensuring alignment with industry needs and DMBOK®overarching goals.

  • Review, analyse, and thoroughly extract relevant information from feedback obtained through various channels, including but not limited to surveys, focus groups, workshops, interviews, and public exposure periods where feedback is gathered on draft content, to incorporate into DMBOK® 3.0. This ensures the content reflects the needs and insights of the global data community and ad hoc review panels.

  • Ensure that the content of DMBOK® 3.0 incorporates and aligns with the data management standards developed and overseen by the DAMA-I Certification Council. The development and publication of these standards are the responsibility of the Certification Council.

  • Uphold editorial integrity and quality standards, ensuring all content meets professional, technical, and ethical benchmarks.

  • Make final editorial decisions regarding content acceptance, revisions, and rejections.

  • Mediate content disputes through structured peer review and expert consultation processes, actively seeking input and perspectives from all involved parties.

 

2. Content Strategy & Development Guidance

  • Provide editorial and content guidance to Specialty Editors and the Technical Writer on the development and revision of content.

  • Oversee the regular review and revision of existing content to reflect current best practices, emerging trends, and technological advancements, in collaboration with Specialty Editors and the Technical Writer, and in alignment with the standards developed by the Certification Council.

  • Offer input on the editorial strategy, themes, and topics that DAMA-I publications should cover, considering diverse perspectives to shape the content selection process.

  • Collaborate with the Project Manager to ensure that content development aligns with project timelines and resource allocation. The Lead Editor's focus is on the what (content), while the Project Manager focuses on the how (process and timelines).

 

3. Quality Assurance & Control

  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, and integrity of all content being published. 

  • Oversee the peer review process facilitated by the Specialty Editors, providing feedback and recommendations on whether content is suitable for DAMA-I publication.

  • Ensure that the Technical Writer adheres to consistent vocabulary and literary style throughout all publications.

  • Verify that the Technical Writer ensures all publications are in the appropriate format for publishing.

 

4. Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate with the Editorial Board, Project Manager, and potentially the Board of Directors to align editorial vision and content priorities. 

  • Collaborate closely with the Project Manager to ensure content planning and project milestones are met from an editorial perspective.

  • Coordinate Specialty Editors to validate content relevance and completeness.

  • Collaborate closely with the CDMP® Masters Editorial Review Panel, actively soliciting and integrating their expert feedback, guidance, and recommendations into the editorial process and content strategy.

  • Work closely with the Certification Council to align exam content, study guides, and learning materials.

  • Provide regular editorial status updates to the Board of Directors, at least quarterly, on the work of the Editorial Board, including a summary of activities, details of decisions, and information regarding publications development.

 

5. Publication & Launch Support

  • Ensure the ongoing accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness of DAMA-I’s professional content, and recommend appropriate mediums for publication.

  • Oversee final editorial reviews, glossary standardization, and index development (the Technical Writer will likely manage the technical aspects of this).

  • Provide input to ensure professional layout and graphics consistency, though the execution will likely involve the Technical Writer and external resources.

  • Contribute to the development of transition guides for organizations migrating between DMBOK® versions from an editorial perspective.

  • Collaborate with DAMA-I’s marketing team (through the Project Manager) to support the launch of publications through conferences, DAMA Chapter engagements, and online channels by providing editorial insights and content summaries.

  • Prepare structured presentation materials for DAMA leaders, trainers, and certification instructors, related to the editorial content of publications.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

​

Required:

  • Proven and extensive experience in editorial leadership, setting editorial vision and managing content development for professional or technical publications. 

  • Demonstrated ability to define and execute editorial strategy and ensure content quality and integrity.

  • Significant experience in leading and managing editorial teams, including subject matter experts.

  • Proven track record of delivering editorial products through to successful publication, demonstrating end-to-end editorial project management.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and critical thinking skills with a strong attention to detail.

  • Proven ability to make sound editorial judgments and resolve content disputes fairly and effectively.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with experience working with diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong understanding of publication processes and standards.

  • Familiarity with intellectual property and citation guidelines.

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with large-scale content development projects for professional audiences.

  • Experience working with volunteer or distributed teams.

  • Familiarity with digital publishing, structured authoring tools, and content lifecycle management.

  • Excellent command of the English language; native or near-native proficiency preferred.
